Birth and Childhood
Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins was born on December 31, 1937, in Margam, Wales, to Muriel Anne and Richard Arthur Hopkins. His father was a baker, and his mother was a distant relation of William Shakespeare. Hopkins had a tumultuous childhood, as his parents’ marriage was fraught with difficulties. When Hopkins was a child, his parents separated, and he was raised by his mother and her second husband, a businessman named Richard Baker.
Growing up, Hopkins had a passion for acting and often performed in school plays. Despite his interest in acting, he initially pursued a career in the arts and attended the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff.
