Birth and Childhood
Mahershala Ali was born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore on February 16, 1974, in Oakland, California. He was raised in the Hayward area by his mother, Willicia Gilmore, an ordained minister, and his stepfather, Phillip Gilmore. Mahershala’s unique name, “Mahershalalhashbaz,” is taken from the Bible, specifically the Book of Isaiah. Growing up, Ali was deeply influenced by his mother’s Christian faith and the strong sense of community fostered within their church.
